When building or remodeling your home or office space, you will not always need a heavy solid door in your interior spaces so your best option is to investigate the styles of hollow core doors available. These doors are made of two sheets of material, usually veneer board or fiberboard, that have interior cardboard struts inside the hollow center for support. You should not attempt to use these hollow core doors in outside applications, as they are not designed for external security uses.
Hollow core interior doors are thin and offer little or no soundproofing benefits, so they work ideally on pantries, closet door spaces or other areas where hearing through the door is desired. Putting a hollow core wood door in your children's play room gives them the privacy they crave, yet allows you to monitor their activities by the sound coming through. They are useful anywhere your needs are for a flat privacy screen. Their surfaces are usually primed and ready to be stained or painted to match whatever decor you are creating and, being inexpensive can be later replaced by a sturdier structure.
In comparing prices between hollow core and solid core doors, you will find a simple hollow core door will cost as little as $20.00 to $30.00 while a solid wood door will easily be twice the price. Being relatively simple in construction, the hollow core door lends itself well to custom-made sizes. By their nature, the machines used to fabricate hollow core wooden doors are mostly standard saws, cutters and belt sanders, so ordering odd sizes is not a major manufacturing obstacle. Cutting hollow core door height to, for example, five-foot instead the standard six foot, eight inches, is as easy as ordering the custom size. You can get a custom-made hollow core wood door in any of dozens of designs and finishes though the cost will increase with the complexity of the job.
The 6-panel hollow core door is an industry standard, which is used in construction of everything from mobile homes and recreational vehicles to suburban homes and office complexes. It gives a "traditional" look to any room and is still easily blended into your overall decor.
If you are planning to accessorize your hollow core wood door with items like coat hooks or small shelves, like spice racks, etc., you will have to use some type of hollow core door anchors. Since the door is hollow, you do not have the luxury of interior studs to hold the screws to the door. Dry wall fasteners are useful in these applications, as are toggle bolts, also known as "Molly Bolts" which make removing and replacing them a bit easier. You can also use metal "straps" passed over the top of the door in the same was as you would hang a "Christmas" wreath.
