Being able to feel secure in your home is essential to all people. The types of door locks that have been created to give that security are numerous and range from inexpensive low security door locks to high tech electronic and keyless door locks. To better determine what type of lock you need for your security purpose, there follows a brief description of some of the most common varieties.
The passage lock is commonly used on interior doors like hallways and closets. They are called privacy door locks when placed on bedroom and bathroom doors and can be opened in an emergency by slipping a narrow piece of metal into the small hole provided. These passageway door locks usually have two knobs although sometimes they will come with levers instead. With a vide variety of styles and finishes they can meet most decorating schemes.
For greater door lock security on exterior doors you can choose from a wide variety of entry door locks. These most often have two knobs with the outer knob only being worked with a key. The inner knob of an entry door lock will either have a small depressible button or turn knob to lock and unlock it but some add extra security by requiring a key for both sides. usually these door locks have the added feature of a "deadlatch" which is a small deadbolt style bar that lays alongside the angled door latch so it is harder to pry the lock open.
Deadbolt door locks will provide a maximum in door lock security. With the bolt being larger and able to set up to an inch into the doorframe it does not work on a spring but must be operated by the key. These door locks will be either one cylinder locks which only require a key on the outside with a latch or two cylinder which need a key to open both sides.
There are other types of door locks for special purposes. You can get electronic keyless door locks, combination door locks, special locks for French doors and even portable door security locks. If you keep missing food, there are refrigerator door locks to keep unwanted eaters out of your food supply. Light weight locks are made to secure pocket and bifold closet doors. Special small locks can be purchased for your storage cabinets as well. Just about any door can be fit with some type of lock whether it requires a key, a combination or an electronic signal so you can keep your possessions secure.
